Medication and kidney failure guidance released

Prescribing guidance for type 2 diabetes and renal impairments has been published by a leading diabetes specialist nurse organisation.

Primary Care Diabetes Society (PCDS) worked with Trend UK on Prescribing Guidance in Patients with Renal Impairment, with funding from NHS Wales.

The document includes information about various drugs including metformin, sulphonylureas, glinides, pioglitazone, DPP-4 inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP 1 receptor agonists.

It includes recommended doses depending on what stage the person’s renal impairment is at.

It is thought about 30 per cent of people with type 1 diabetes and up to 40 per cent of those with type 2 diabetes will eventually develop some kind of kidney failure.

This document is part of a range of Trend UK resources available for patients and nurses via the organisation’s website. To gain access users must create an account and log in.

In addition, PCDS and Trend UK have also launched a new e-learning module ‘Type 2 Diabetes: Non Insulin Therapies’.
